Skin Effects from Systemic Cancer
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy, although intended to target the internal malignancy only, also cause widespread effects to skin. These include sensitivity to smells and household products, dryness, flaking, irritation, and sensitivity. Skin effects from cancer treatments may last a lifetime. These issues are frustrating for the patient and physician because they are so difficult to improve. However, the skincare professional has a great deal to offer these patients and these modalities also give hope during a difficult time and improve feelings of depression and hopelessness.
